New Tricks Series 6 to get an early release date courtesy of Acorn Media UK

Acorn Media has announced that the latest series of the popular BBC police drama New Tricks is to be given an exclusive early DVD release date this week on its website ahead of a general release later in the year.

New Tricks DVD Series 6 which was screened in the summer of 2009 remains one of the most popular TV shows on British television and regularly pulls in excess of 8 million viewers as well as being broadcast in over 18 different countries around the world.

In Series 6 Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman heads The Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS), cracking previously unsolved crimes from the past. Her team are three ex policemen; Gerry Standing, Jack Halford and Brian Lane, who for various reasons all opted for early retirement.

Brian enters The Trinity Clinic for treatment of his alcohol addiction, unearthing a new case in the

process. The team also investigate a military cover-up, enter the not-so-glamorous world of films and look into the reappearance of a dead woman. Hanson rears his violent head once again and many family secrets are uncovered in the meat market at Smithfield’s.

UCOS’s track record and reputation precede them, attracting cases from outside their jurisdiction. However, they still insist on rejecting modern policing methods, proving the old ways are the best.

New Tricks stars Amanda Redman, Dennis Waterman, Alun Armstrong and James Bolam and has also just been commissioned for a further 2 series to the delight of its millions of fans.

Also little note for all you New Tricks trivia fans who wonder how series creator Roy Mitchell and West Brom football fan came up with the characters names "Generally," he explained, "thinking up names is a very boring part of being a writer. I just thought it would be hilarious to name the entire cast after the West Brom '68 cup-winning side. As for the main characters, well, they are all named after the Halfords Lane Stand. James Bolam plays Jack Halford, Alun Armstrong is Brian Lane, and Dennis Waterman is Gerry Standing. Halford Lane Standing!”

Reviews of New Tricks:

“New Tricks....a return to good old-fashioned TV values such as carefully honed scripts and the employment of actors for what they can do, rather than how they look.

This is London

Its sense of humour is another reason why the programme continues to do so well. That, and the fact that the stars’ craggy faces aren’t their only selling point. Armstrong and co – particularly Armstrong, in fact – are also fine actors. And if the new series’ guest stars continue in the calibre of Richard Wilson it promises to be a vintage innings of New Tricks all round.
