Australia vs IrelandWALKING WOUNDED:
Wallaby winger Digby Ioane suffered a fractured thumb against Italy and will miss the next few matches. He has not been replaced in the squad, as Robbie Deans understands that the break will heal in time for Ioane to play a role later in the tournament. It was a fairly simple task redrawing the team, though. James O’Connor moves up from the reserves and Drew Mitchell goes onto the bench. Otherwise, the same team that played Italy has been named again.

Jerry Flannery, who was named on the bench for this match, tore a calf at training and his World Cup is probably over. Damien Varley is on his way to New Zealand and if he joins the team in a full-time capacity, Flannery has to leave. Ireland made four changes from the team that played USA, and with Cian Healy and Sean O’Brien fit again two of them were always going to happen. There was no great shock at the other two, where first-team regulars have been reinstated at halfback and fullback.

While neither side would have been thrilled with their 80-minute performance, Australia had rather more to be happy about last weekend. It took a while before the Wallabies could break away from a close-quarter battle with the Italian forwards but when it happened they piled on four tries in short order. In that quarter of an hour they looked every inch the contender and, assuming they are working into the tournament, are likely to be a difficult opponent from here on.

Ireland had to work hard to overcome spirited USA resistance at New Plymouth, although the result was never really in doubt. Ireland suffered through their own errors, many of which allowed the USA to wriggle off defensive hooks, but also made little headway against some aggressive midfield defence. The forwards impressed, winning set piece ball in controlled fashion, and did a lot of damage with prolonged and well organised drives. Still, improvement is needed for this match.

WHO’S HOT:
Wallaby skipper James Horwill was named Man of the Match against Italy, a decision questioned by some pundits. However, there were good reasons the choice fell his way: there was no standout performer in a good Wallaby team effort and Horwill had his usual effective game at the set pieces and was strong around the field where his best work was unglamorous but vital. The guys around him will know how well he played, but he was at the heart of a solid Australian win.

Ireland were well served by their forwards against the USA, and none was better than lock Paul O’Connell. He was a commanding presence at the lineout, and his assured catching was a good platform for Ireland to launch energy-sapping drives, while he was always involved in the rugged close exchanges, whether making tackles or putting his body on the line to protect Ireland’s ball. Long known as a class international performer, his initial display at this tournament

THEY SAY:
Wallaby boss Robbie Deans is expecting nothing less than a hard-fought battle, having faced Ireland in the past and seen the Wallabies nearly come unstuck in their three most recent meetings. “They are a solid unit, filled with experienced performers,” Deans said. “Their set piece is excellent, they have a big pack and they will be up for it, seeing this match as a great opportunity to make a statement. Crucially they have also troubled us in the past, and will believe they can do so again.”

Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll, who has faced Australia more than any other Northern Hemisphere player, cannot wait for what promises to be a tough match. “They are one of the best teams in the world, so why not take the opportunity now?” he said. “It may not present itself again to play in a situation like this, so give it your all.” If the rest of the Ireland team have the skipper’s balance of anticipation and awareness of their foe’s strengths, this should be a fierce and close battle.
