South Africa vs FijiWALKING WOUNDED:
Fiji coach Sam Domoni has kept it simple in naming his side for this match, going with an unchanged backline from the Namibia match but making three alterations to his pack. The biggest news on the bench is the presence of Nicky Little, who will appear at his fourth World Cup when he takes the field.

Bakkies Botha has been passed fit to play, which must be something of a relief to the Springbok selectors as they are without Bryan Habana (knee), Jean de Villiers (ribs), Victor Matfield (hamstring) and Butch James (hip) for this match. The only voluntary change from the Wales match was a straight swap at prop, where Gurthro Steenkamp gets the start.

South Africa vs Fiji
Fiji did what they needed to against Namibia, scoring six tries and, apart from a few minutes in the early stages, leading all the way. There were moments – probably too many for Domoni’s peace of mind – when Namibia made easy metres down the flanks but superior speed closed several of those movements down. It is a luxury Fiji won’t have in this match. It is probably unfair to gauge Fiji’s form on that game, as it was one they were expected to win well and they did so, and the shakedown will not have hurt before a big contest like this one.

South Africa nearly lost to Wales – depending on who you read, they did but just scored more points than the Dragons – and nobody could have argued a flawed result had Wales won. For long periods of that match Wales dominated the forward exchanges – until Bismarck du Plessis came on. Heinrich Brussow was also a lone soldier at the breakdown – and the Boks were hanging on for much of the second half. In the end, they had the belief Wales lacked but intangibles will not win every game in a tournament as hard as this one promises to be.

WHO’S HOT:
Fiji wing Vereniki Goneva had a dream World Cup debut, as he had his hat-trick by half-time and a fourth try midway through the second period. After that the ball hardly reached his wing or, if it did, there were lots of forwards having a seagull out there, but Goneva had done more than enough. While he may not have had to run through half the team each time, he showed all the attributes of a top-class winger and, most importantly, finished his chances.

Although he remains on the bench, Springbok utility-back Francois Hougaard had a major and immediate impact when he came on against Wales. Blessed with plenty of pace and a good work ethic, he often bobs up in unexpected places and is dangerous around rucks near the posts. He scores a stack of tries from those situations – as he did on Sunday – with superbly timed runs and good lines. There are few who appeal as the potential ‘impact player of the tournament’ more

South Africa vs FijiTHEY SAY:
Veteran Fiji fly-half Nicky Little understands that his team needs to have a bit of freedom about their play. “(Fijian) is the only style we can play,” he said. “We try and put a lid on it sometimes and maybe we win or we don’t win, but the boys don’t enjoy it.” Fiji, like Samoa, have produced some big World Cup wins down the years but seldom when trying to play like New Zealand or Australia. When local style and flair is allowed expression, the rest can watch out.

Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis, who made such a big impact last week, makes no apologies for the Boks paying a lot of attention to defensive detail. “When we heard who was in our pool it was one of the aspects we were looking at,” said du Plessis. “Island teams, like Fiji on the weekend and Samoa, they’ve got very good athletes from one to 15 who can outrun most of our guys. It’s been one of the things we’ve been working on very hard.” When it mattered against Wales, the defence was always there even if it was forced to scramble at times.
