Georgia are unbeaten in the 2011-12 European Nations Cup and have beaten three three nearest opponents, albeit narrowly, this year. The Lelos started the match against Romania with a rush and were looking likely to run up a score before the game became a real slog between two big, strong packs. Having seen what Romania did to Scotland’s forwards will not have upset the Georgians one bit and they will fancy their chances in this match. Georgia are clearly the seventh-best side in Europe and there may not be much between them and the fifth-best.

Scotland had more than a few nervous moments in their opener before a couple of late tries put Romania away, but there will be a lot more the coaching staff were unhappy about than pleased them. The major concern will be the scrum, which was given a torrid time by the Romanian eight and shoved about in embarrassing fashion on more than one occasion. If Scotland are to convince anybody that it will challenge either England or Argentina for a playoff position in the group, they will need to play significantly better than they did on Saturday afternoon.

WHO’S HOT/PLAYER TO WATCH:
Georgia’s strength is in the pack and the Lelos have none better than blockbusting loose forward Mamuka Gorgodze. At 1.96m and 118kg he’s a big unit and hard to stop when he gets a full head of steam up, which is the pace he plays every match. Often used to smash opposing defences in the close channels, he is such a regular try-scorer that his tally of 18 in only 37 Tests puts him in the elite top group of try-scoring forwards from all countries and with a higher strike rate than most.

Fly-half Dan Parks has played an important part in most of Scotland’s significant wins in recent years, through his ability to control play, kick goals off the tee when needed or pop over the occasional but telling dropped goal. Given the fact Scotland floundered for much of their opener, the experienced Parks will be handed a big job on Wednesday, especially if he has to nurse his forwards through some tough times.

THEY SAY:
Things have been quiet around the Georgia camp as the team has been preparing down Queenstown way and keeping a much lower profile than many. Coach Richie Dixon has not been hiding anything, but knows the Lelos have to hit the ground running. “Everything really depends on what happens in the first game,” he said. “The first game is so vital in any competition, but particularly in our situation if we can really go well against Scotland.” Going well could end up meaning upsetting the team he once coached.

Andy Robinson was looking for his forwards to up their performance level significantly after a bad day out against Romania. “Of course we will look for considerable improvement on our display at the weekend, particularly in our discipline at the breakdown, an area where we have been consistently good in recent times,” he said. He might, but didn’t bother to, add that the scrum needs to hold a lot stronger than it did last Saturday.
