Wallabies began as favorite in Pool C and looked the part against Italy, coping with a strong Azzurri forward effort before launching a match-winning 15-minute burst that netted four tries. But that all came undone against Ireland, when the Wallabies never got to grips with the rugged Irish defence and created few chances; those that were available for a few fleeting moments tended to vanish beneath a smother of green jerseys as the Ireland forwards dominated the physical exchanges.

USA is enjoying one of thir best World Cups to date, having given Ireland a real battle in their opener and then getting a rare win – only the Eagles’ third in World Cup history – over Russia in a tough second encounter. While there may not be much flashy about the USA attack there is a lot to like about the team’s rugged defence, which is proving very hard to break down. Like many of the second-tier nations at this World Cup, the USA is closing the gap on the bigger nations but still has a little way to go before an upset is a realistic proposition.
