England vs Georgia Preview:
WALKING WOUNDED:
England lock Courtney Lawes will miss this game and the one against Romania after being cited and suspended following his late, sliding knees-first charge into Argentina hooker Mario Ledesma in the tournament opener. Andy Sheridan, who has a history of shoulder problems, has been ruled out of the tournament following another one and a replacement will be named in the next day or so. Those changes are just two of the 10 Martin Johnson has made for this match, with the others all optional.

Georgia has made one change from the side that started against Scotland, with a straight swap at lock where Ilia Zedginidze gets the start.

England vs Georgia

England copped a general and universal pasting after an insipid performance against Argentina, which only resulted in a win after Ben Youngs made more impact in 20 minutes than the other players did in 80. What nobody expected was for the kickers to have such miserable outings under cover at Dunedin, but if Argentina had kicked all their goals the Pumas would have been out of sight – and if Jonny Wilkinson had done better than three from eight England would have won comfortably. It still would have been a horrible game, though.

Georgia gave Scotland plenty in their opener at Invercargill midweek, but did not show much more than most people expected. Everyone knew Georgia would look to their pack as options A, B and C, which is what happened, and that the forwards are both big and well drilled. Again, that was demonstrated for the full 80 minutes. But there was not much on offer beyond fly-half – the ball seldom made its way along the line – and Georgia was not quite good enough to cause an upset by playing 10-man rugby.

WHO’S HOT/PLAYER TO WATCH:
England looked like a team trying to lose a winnable match against Argentina until replacement halfback Ben Youngs made a huge difference. The only England player to show any urgency, his second-half appearance was the spark that led to England’s best period in the match. He showed ability to run from the scrum base, appreciation of where there might be gaps and a good idea of how to make best use of any available space.

England vs Georgia
Georgia needs to get their backline into gear if they are to have any chance of knocking over one of the bigger teams at this tournament. The forwards have already showed themselves to be a capable unit, so fly-half Merab Kvirikashvili will be asked to vary his play a little more than he did in the opener. A talented player and long-serving international, he has a difficult task as the backline is not used to taking on such speedy opponents as England but needs to find a way to get the job done.

THEY SAY:
England reserve prop Alex Corbisiero has plenty on his mind this week, with the Georgian pack’s ability not least of them. “They’re a big pack, they’re physical, they

like to scrummage, they’re going to want to take us on so we’re going to have to do our homework this week and put in a big effort in the set pieces,” he said earlier in the week. And now, with Sheridan heading home, Corbisiero has a chance to push for a starting place if he can handle the tough eastern Europeans.

Georgia coach Richie Dixon thought his team could have gone a lot closer to what would have been a major upset on Wednesday. “Some of the penalties were a result of over-enthusiasm rather than deliberation. I was bitterly disappointed we let Scotland off the hook at times. I thought we were our own worst enemies when we attacked.” But those first-game nerves are now out of the system, so it will be interesting to see how the Lelos go in this match.
