Tonga vs JapanTonga vs Japan Preview:
WALKING WOUNDED:

There were few surprises in the team John Kirwan named to face Tonga, as he has reverted to 13 of the 15 that started against France. He lost another two players to injury in the New Zealand match, with scrum-half Tomoki Yoshida (hamstring) and centre Yuta Imamura (ankle) joining lock Justin Ives (knee) and No 8 Ryukoliniasi Holani (knee) as players who have been replaced for the tournament.

The team Tonga has named bears little resemblance to the one that faced Canada, with wholesale changes in the forwards and inside backs. The big name missing is skipper Finau Maka, who has been battling ankle problems throughout the tournament and has not been at his best.

Japan has made no secret of the fact it wants to win two matches at this tournament and this is the first of them. The loss to France was much closer on the field than the score indicates; with 15 minutes to play Japan only trailed 21-25 before France ran in three late tries. Most of the top players were rested for the New Zealand game and the scoreline was about what could be expected in those circumstances. The best Japanese XV looked very good in their one outing so far and has shown the ability to create and take scoring chances against strong opposition.

Tonga was competitive against New Zealand, turning in a particularly good second half effort that limited the All Blacks to a 12-7 advantage in that time. But mistakes against Canada, and the inability to nail some early scoring chances, let the gritty Canadian side first stay in the game and then recover to win it with a late try. Tonga was probably the best side at the Pacific Nations Cup this year but missed out on the title on a bizarre final day, and no doubt has plenty of motivation for this match.

THEY SAY:
Japan flanker Itaru Taniguchi has no fears about whatever Tonga might throw at them. “We watched them on film, but they play a real simple game. We’ve figured out their strengths as well as their weaknesses,” he said. “We’re not just going to try to stop them, we’re going to hit back. My guess is that they think Japanese players will sit there and take it, so imagine how surprised they might be if we took it right to them.” After the Pacific Nations Cup, it is unlikely Tonga will by surprised by anything Japan dishes out, but you have to love the attitude.

Tongan goal-kicker Kurt Morath was disappointed with his start off the tee against Canada, and is determined to hit the target from the word ‘Go’ on Wednesday. Like all the players from both teams, he sees this as the important phase of their World Cups. “I think it’s the start of our Rugby World Cup,” he said. “After what happened last Wednesday (against Canada), if we can get up against Japan and then going into that last game against France, we want to finish on a high.” A few early goals will no doubt help in that bid.
